GROW YOUR WAY, FROM START TO HARVEST

Skip the inoculation and colonisation stages with our fully colonised Mushroom Fruiting Blocks. Ready to move into fruiting conditions, they’re ideal for home growers and more experienced cultivators looking for a convenient way to produce fresh gourmet mushrooms.

01 What is a Mushroom Fruiting Block?

A mushroom fruiting block is a substrate block that has already been fully colonised with mushroom mycelium and is ready to move into fruiting conditions. There’s no need to inoculate grain or wait for the substrate to colonise, so you can skip straight to the fruiting stage and start working towards your first harvest.

02 Which mushrooms are available as fruiting blocks?

Our Mushroom Fruiting Blocks collection includes a range of gourmet species, including Lion’s Mane, King Oyster, Shiitake, Blue Oyster, Reishi, Golden Oyster, Black Pearl King Oyster and Pink Oyster.

03 Do mushroom fruiting blocks need a spore or liquid culture syringe?

No. Our fruiting blocks arrive pre-colonised with the mushroom variety you have selected, so there is no need to inoculate them with a spore or liquid culture syringe. The colonisation stage has already been completed before the block reaches you.

04 Are mushroom fruiting blocks suitable for beginners?

Yes. Because the inoculation and colonisation stages have already been completed, fruiting blocks remove much of the more technical preparation involved in mushroom cultivation. They can be grown with regular misting or placed into a suitable fruiting chamber, making them accessible to beginners while also being useful for experienced growers with Monotubs, Martha tents or dedicated fruiting rooms.

05 How do you use a mushroom fruiting block?

Before starting, we recommend reading our full Mushroom Fruiting Block Complete Grow Kit Guide. The preparation method varies depending on the mushroom species, so it’s important to follow the correct instructions for the variety you’re growing.

For example, Lion’s Mane can be top or side fruited, King Oyster is best top fruited, Blue Oyster is fruited through a small slit or “X” in the side of the bag, while Shiitake and Reishi require different preparation. Once prepared, keep the block in suitable fruiting conditions with high humidity, fresh air exchange and indirect or ambient light.

06 What conditions do mushroom fruiting blocks need?

The ideal conditions depend on the mushroom species you’re growing, so always check the requirements for your chosen variety.

Generally, fruiting blocks need high humidity of over 80%, good fresh air exchange and indirect or ambient light. Fruiting temperatures vary by species: Lion’s Mane 15–25°C, Blue Oyster 15–20°C, King Oyster 16–21°C, Shiitake 18–22°C, and Reishi 21–27°C.

07 Do I need a fruiting chamber for a mushroom fruiting block?

Not necessarily. A block can be kept humid through regular misting, but a controlled fruiting chamber such as a Monotub or Martha tent can make it easier to maintain suitable humidity and growing conditions. This can be particularly useful if you are growing several blocks or want greater control over the fruiting environment.

08 How long do mushroom fruiting blocks take to produce mushrooms?

Once introduced to suitable fruiting conditions, pins can begin forming in around 7–21 days, depending on the species. Lion’s Mane, Blue Oyster and King Oyster are generally ready to harvest in less than 2 weeks, while Shiitake can take around 30 days and Reishi around 60 days to reach maturity.

09 How should I store a mushroom fruiting block if I’m not ready to use it?

We recommend starting your fruiting block reasonably soon after receiving it. If you’re not ready to fruit it straight away, keep the block refrigerated until you are ready to begin. When refrigerated correctly, the blocks can be stored for at least 12 months.
